A French deck of 52 cards (54 cards counting 2 joker cards) is a popular deck of cards mostly used throughout the world. Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, and Spades are recognized as the four suits of a French Deck of 52 cards. Suits contain 13 cards (Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King) each. Whilst each card is identified with suit and rank. The French Deck is stated to be sometimes referred to as “English” or “Anglo-American” pattern.

What Four Suits on a French Deck Represent 

The four suits Club, Heart, Diamond, and Spade represent society and human energy overall.  

  • Club: Working for peasantry and achievement 
  • Heart: The merchant class and the excitement for the creation of wealth  
  • Diamond: Clergy and struggle for the achievement of inner joy 
  • Spade: The institutionalization of the warrior class into the nobility 

A pack of cards is believed to have come to Europe more than 600 years ago. Italian Merchants brought the pack into Europe. The use of the cards was discovered in Mamlūk (Mameluke) Egypt-based cosmopolitan cities. The credit for this discovery goes to the Italian merchants. Swords, Batons (or wands), Cups, and Coins (or rings) are the symbols brought by them. Countries like Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Italy use these symbols.   

It is believed that modern four suits or four suits of a French deck of 52 cards gradually developed in France more than 500 years ago. The English accepted the suits in no time. Whilst the concept of Queen was accepted by the French. Mameluke Egyptians are believed to have malik (king), naib malik (viceroy), and thaim naib (deputy) in the earlier time. The triumph of the ace was also innovated in the French. It was added at the traditional level. It is also believed that a pack of cards was developed in China. Whilst the credit for this development goes to the Egyptians. There were printed sheets expressed in numbers dividing into four parts that go to the concubines of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) ago.
