The Hero Of BPL- Shakib Al Hasan

Avatar of Shabnam Dhar

Shakib AL Hasan is the only player in the Bangladesh Premier League to be declared “Player of the Series” thrice. No other player ever in the history of BPL has been nominated as “Player of the series” even twice.  So undoubtedly the HERO OF BANGLADESH PREMIER LEAGUE is Shakib Al Hasan, the Prodigious bowler, who is also, incidentally the highest wicket-taker in BPL. With the Big Bash League in session now, the BPL cricket fans must be quite excited and engaged with the matches.

Shakib was nominated as the ‘Player of the series in the year 2012, 2013, and again in the year 2019. In 2012, Shakib played for Khulna Royal Bengals, in 2013 he represented Dhaka Gladiators and again in the year 2019, he was with Dhaka Dynamites. He is also recognized as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time. In 2019, ESPN’s “World Fame 100” has also recognized him as one of the world’s most famous athletes.

In the year 2015, Shakib became the first player, ever in the history of cricket, to be ranked as “No 1 All-Rounder” across all three formats i.e. Test, ODI and T20. In November 2018, he became the first Bangladeshi Bowler to take 200 wickets in Test Matches. He is the only player to score 1000 runs and take 30 wickets in the World Cup.

So many accolades and recognitions showered on him, he is truly a HERO. BPL cricket fans must be eagerly waiting to find out who wins the various titles in the current BBL season. Shakib Al Hasan was born on 24th March 1987 in the Magura District of Bangladesh. He is a left-handed batsman and orthodox left-arm bowler.

His Test Debut match was with India on 18th May 2007. The BPL cricket fans must be surely remembering that the inaugural season of BBL was played in 2011-2012.

As a youngster, he started playing from his village level and got noticed for his excellent cricket skills and got a berth in the Under 19 team. Shakib used this opportunity very well and performed well in the U19 matches. He scored a century in 86 balls and bagged 3 wickets in the finals, because of which Bangladesh could score a win over Sri Lanka. This superb debut performance again found him a berth in the series against Zimbabwe.

In December 2011, in a home series against Pakistan, he played exceedingly well and charted new records. This made him earn the title of BEST ALL-ROUNDER from ICC. In November 2014, Shakib scored a hundred and took 10 wickets in the same match and became the third player to effectuate this feat after Imran khan and Ian Botham.

Surprisingly Shakib was considered to be more of a batsman, than a bowler till the tour of the Bangladesh cricket team to New Zealand. But Jamie Siddons, the coach of the Bangladesh Team decided to explore the bowling skills of Shakib and he was asked to take the role of a specialist bowler. Interesting information for BPL cricket fans that Jamie Siddons was an ex-Australian cricketer.

This was perhaps a pivotal decision that turned the tables for good for Shakib. He performed spectacularly and in the first innings of the opening match against New Zealand, he took 7 wickets for 37 runs. This established him as a bowler to be taken seriously. From here on, though he played as an all-rounder, his role as bowler came into prominence. He is 32 now and many more cricketing years await him to better his performance and record.
