NIFTY and SENSEX (a product of the Bombay Stock Exchange) are the two national indices. The India Index Services and Products (IISL) manages NIFTY, which is fully owned by the National Stock Exchange Strategic Investment Corporation Limited.

NIFTY is a market index by the NSE. The word Nifty derived from National Stock Exchange and Fifty. NSE coined the concept of NSE on 21st April 1996. While a benchmark-based index called NIFTY 50 contains the top 50 stocks that investors can trade in the stock exchange out of a total of 1600 stocks. NIFTY 50 is the flagship of NSE.

NIFTY belongs to the Futures and Options (F&O) segment of NSE where investors can trade in derivatives. 

All these 50 stocks come from 12 sectors of the Indian economy. Information technology, financial services, consumer goods, entertainment and media, financial services, metals, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, cement and its products, automobiles, pesticides and fertilizers, energy, and other services are 12 sectors.
